Cumbria Constabulary are proud to support the UK’s military forces and to be a part of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), supporting servicemen and women and their families.
In 2023, Cumbria Constabulary signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a pledge to treat service personnel and their families with fairness and respect. In 2024 we were awarded the ERS Silver Award.
Written into law, the Covenant states that Armed Forces personnel, veterans or their families will not be disadvantaged by their military life when accessing goods and services, compared to other citizens. It also recognises that in some circumstances special treatment may be appropriate, especially for the injured or bereaved. In signing the Covenant, we have pledged to publicise our commitment to it’s principles, and support our Armed Forces community.
Cumbria Constabulary has a Staff network of nearly 100 Police Officers and Staff from a wide range of military backgrounds, including veterans, reservists, cadet force leaders and family members and allies.
Cumbria Constabulary offers a range of armed forces friendly policies including career breaks for reservists to go on overseas tours of duty and 10 days paid leave for training and cadet camps.
The Forcer Protocol is an Armed Forces missing persons strategy designed to help give Police Forces a much-improved assessment of risk, together with early lines of enquiry in the event that a veteran in crisis goes missing. Cumbria Constabulary were the second Force in the Country (after GMP) to launch the Forcer Protocol. More details can be found at Forcer Protocol – Safe and Found Online.
Every veteran that enters the Criminal Justice system in Cumbria is automatically referred to Op NOVA. Provided by the Forces Employment Charity, Op Nova will assess the veterans needs and create a shared action plan with the veteran and other charities to help the veteran lead a stable life.
We actively encourage those from the Armed Forces or with a military background to apply for a role with Cumbria Constabulary. Our job roles are diverse, ranging from police officers and PCSOs, to civilian staff in departments such as IT, Command and Control Room or Fleet and Estates. We are regularly recruiting for roles within the Force and strive to employ a diverse workforce.
