In May 2022 the National Police Race Action Plan was launched by the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) and the College of Policing. The plan aims to improve trust and confidence in policing among Black communities.
All police forces in England and Wales are committed to supporting the plan and achieving its objectives.
Cumbria Police’s Police Race Action Plan was created with oversight from engaged community members and groups who acted in an advisory capacity. At the bottom of this section there are more details of how you can get involved in supporting or overseeing Cumbria Police Race Action Plan activity.
As part of the plan, an anti-racism commitment for policing has also been launched which all forces are committed to. The commitment has been shaped through extensive consultation with police forces, criminal justice partners, civil society groups and community representatives, alongside established anti-racism frameworks.
Our Race Action Plan mirrors the national approach with four main workstreams, each with a senior lead.
By being a police service that is representative of Black and ethnic minority individuals and communities and supports its officers and staff of a Black or minority ethnic heritage.
By being a police service that is fair, respectful and equitable in its actions towards Black and ethnic minority individuals and communities.
By being a police service that routinely involves Black and ethnic minority individuals and communities in its governance.
By being a police service that protects Black and ethnic minority individuals and communities from crime and seeks justice for them.
Within Cumbria the leads of these workstreams at portfolio leads of Superintendent rank or above to ensure suitable seniority to drive change.
Since the plan was launched, we have made considerable progress in embedding the plan into the organisation, the service we deliver and our policies and procedures to ensure inclusivity, diversity and equality.
The force is currently in the process of implementing a stakeholder engagement tool to support increased engagement of the Race Action Plan.
In July, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) launched the first progress report for the Police Race Action Plan (PRAP). The report provides an overview of the progress the PRAP has made since it was first published in 2022 and takes a look at the outcomes and the collective commitment across all forces to rid the police service of racism, discrimination and bias. You can find the full report linked on the NPCC website.
We are looking for people interested in our ongoing work as part of the Race Action Plan to join us and give us feedback. We are currently seeking members who would like to be involved in community advisory to join our specialist branch of our Community Advisory Groups (CAG) which will be committed to the Police Race Action Plan
