Being a detective is a rewarding and very interesting career, each day brings new challenges and although at times it can be extremely frustrating it can also be incredibly exciting.
The role requires a level of resilience and the ability to be flexible. At times you need to be able to ‘think outside the box’ so versatility is crucial.
Incidents and investigations can move very quickly and you will have to rely on your instincts and believe in your ability to control a situation. However, mostly you have time to plan and access all available resources in order to make the best and most appropriate decisions.
Communication skills are of paramount importance. They are the best skills anyone can possess and will see you through many different situations.
Never be afraid to ask, always ask, there is always someone to assist you and help with any area of Policing and with your basic communication skills being able to ask for help is key to any role.
I genuinely believe that as a Police Officer you can make such a positive impact on people’s lives.
You will experience many challenging and sometimes very emotional situations, all of which will make you a stronger and more experienced officer.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my career so far and after 26 years’ service I intend to continue enjoying my role and am still learning every day I come into work.
I genuinely believe that as a Police Officer you can make such a positive impact on people’s lives, and help them deal with the most difficult times, this in itself is a humbling and rewarding experience.
My family are very proud of me and my career as a Police Officer and a detective, both of which have had a positive influence on my children and their view of the world and Policing. This is extremely important to me and setting a good example to them makes me feel very proud.
