We are busy developing a new and improved website

Firearms Applications

Please read the notes attached to the application form

We will aim to process renewal and grant applications as soon as practicable, depending on work volumes and other factors. This will, however, be subject to all required information being received and enquiries completed. In addition, to avoid delays in processing your application please ensure your application form is fully completed and any relevant supporting information provided. Incomplete applications will be returned.

Please fully complete the form including the sections regarding health and previous offences. Please be honest; mental health issues and previous convictions will not necessarily prevent you from obtaining a certificate but withholding information may jeopardise your application.

Renewals

A renewal reminder will be sent to the address held in our records 12 weeks before your certificate(s) is due to expire. If we receive your fully completed application form and supporting documentation more than eight weeks before expiry, you will automatically be given an eight-week extension. However, once an application is on the system and even though your current certificate expires, you can remain in possession of your guns.

Only in certain cases will a temporary permit need to be issued and if your application is received after the expiry date of your certificate, you will be required to lodge your guns with a registered firearms dealer or someone with the appropriate certificates/authorisations. Your application will also then be considered a grant and you will have to pay the appropriate fee.

For a renewal application, your form should be accompanied by the following;

  • The completed medical proforma
  • The fee
  • One passport-style photograph
  • Full copies of your certificates
  • If shooting quarry, details of a landowner or whoever has the sporting rights where you have permission to shoot
  • If target shooting, a copy of your current club membership card

Grants

If applying for a grant, your form should be accompanied by the following;

  • The completed medical proforma
  • The fee
  • One passport-style photograph
  • If shooting quarry, details of a landowner or whoever has the sporting rights where you have permission to shoot
  • If target shooting, a copy of your current club membership card

Variations

If you are replacing a Section 1 gun with one of a similar type/calibre, then you will be required to do what is called a “one-for-one” variation which does not attract a fee. In this case, you must notify us that you have already disposed or transferred your old gun. However, if an additional authority is requested, the fee will be required. You can, of course, apply for additional authorisations when you renew your certificate at no additional cost.

Please be aware, that you will not automatically be given the authority to acquire a particular gun and you should not purchase or take possession of it until you have been given the authority.

If you are applying to vary a firearm certificate, please include the following with the fully completed form;

  • The fee (if necessary)
  • Your firearm certificate
  • If you have disposed of a gun in anticipation, attach a copy of the transfer details to the application.
