A Carlisle man has today (Sept 13), appeared at Carlisle Crown Court for sex offences and assault.

Dean Norman, 34, formally of Shady Grove Road, Carlisle was sentenced to a fourteen year extended sentence for sexual assault on a female, assaulting a female by penetration, assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm and attempt to rape a woman.

The offences relate to an incident against a woman on 16th November 2020.

DC Atkinson of North Cumbria Crime and Safeguarding team said “Norman subjected his victim to a serious assault before sexually assaulting her whilst unconscious.  

“Norman went to the victim’s property and was invited in by victim unknowing of his intentions having been asked if he could come in to dry his coat. Once inside the address he began his serious assault causing significant injuries to her head and face.

“Following the assault, the victim was left unconscious before Norman subjected her to a sexual assault.

“This was a horrific attack, and the victim has shown courage and bravery throughout.

 

“These offences have a lasting impact, but I hope today gives some closure to the victim and their family.

 

“Support is also available to anyone you can visit Cumbria Together an information portal bringing services and information about what is available for those affected by crime together, including rape and sexual offences, irrespective of whether a crime has been reported or not.

 

“I would urge anyone who has been subject to offences of this nature to come forward, any report will be dealt with professionally and sensitively.”

Cumbria Constabulary's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences awareness campaign

Cumbria Constabulary are running a rape and serious sexual offences awareness campaign. 
Titled, ‘Your Choice’, the campaign was designed by the Constabulary with the support of the University of Cumbria and their Students’ Union. 

 

The focus of the campaign is to increase reporting and to empower victims/survivors with the knowledge that they have a choice of confidential support services they can access should they find themselves the victim of rape or a sexual assault.

The highlighted support services can be accessed 24/7 regardless of whether a crime has just been committed or is historic and regardless of whether a crime has been reported to the police or not.
