GRANT APPLICATION PROCEDURE                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       If

If your permanent home address is in Cumbria please ensure you submit your application to the Firearms Licensing Unit, Police Headquarters, Carleton Hall, Penrith, CA10 2AU.

Please, having read the notes fully complete your application form, noting you must be registered with a UK GP.

It is a requirement that you supply details of a referee, two, if your application relates to a firearm certificate,
1 photograph, full face, no hat, 45mm x 35mm, endorsed in accordance with the notes on the application form.  

For a firearm, evidence of good reason, this may be a letter from the owner of land upon which you have authority to shoot and/or proof of full membership of a Home Office approved gun club.

Please obtain details of the correct fee and payment details form the fees information.

VALIDITY PERIOD FOR CERTIFICATES

If you are the holder of a firearm certificate you may, when applying for the grant or renewal of a shotgun certificate, apply for it to have the same expiry date. Future renewals of the shotgun certificate will be completed at a reduced cost.

HOME VISIT

You will receive a visit, by appointment, from a Firearm or Shotgun Enquiry Officer who will check the security arrangements in place, discuss all matters in relation to the application, which will include your experience and knowledge, make contact with your referee(s) and, in respect of firearms, may make contact with the landowners where you are to shoot.

VARIATION TO A FIREARM CERTIFICATE

Form 201V should be completed and submitted with your firearm certificate, evidence of good reason for additional firearm(s), which could be confirmation from a landowner of a requirement to carry out additional species control or membership of a Home Office approved gun club, together with the applicable fee should be sent to the Firearms Licensing Unit.

ONE FOR ONE VARIATION

If a firearm is sold or disposed of, a replacement cannot be acquired until the certificate has been varied and the authority granted. 

If the variation is to acquire a replacement and no additional firearms are required, the application will be processed free of charge providing it is made at the same time as the notification of sale/disposal.  This will of course be subject to the good reason criteria being met.

You should – transfer/sell the firearm to an authorised person and as per the instructions above Table 1 of the firearm certificate, notify the Firearms Licensing Unit within 7 days.  At the same time forward your completed Form 201V, with the details of the new owner of the firearm(s) and your firearm certificate to the Firearms Licensing Unit.

EUROPEAN FIREARMS PASS

This document acts as a “passport” for guns which appear on your firearm and/or shotgun certificates as possessed.  The Pass will have the same expiry date as your certificate(s).  They are free to issue, please apply in writing, email is acceptable, detailing which guns are to appear and grant permission for one of the photographs you have previously supplied to be used on the Pass.


RENEWAL PROCEDURE

Legislation does not require the police to remind you the renewal of your firearms and/or shotgun certificate is due, however, 10 weeks prior to the expiry date a renewal package will be forwarded to you.

If you have not received the package within 5 weeks of expiry please download the application form and fees information from this website.

Following receipt of the fully completed application you will receive a visit, by appointment, from an Enquiry Officer when security will be confirmed, details of firearms in your possession checked to confirm serial numbers are correct, for a firearm holder quantities of ammunition held and used will be confirmed and any other matters in relation to the application will be discussed.
