Police are warning residents in Carlisle after being alerted to a possible scam in the Upperby area of Carlisle.
Police officers were called yesterday afternoon after a woman was approached in her home at around 12.45pm by a suspected bogus official, claiming to work for British Gas.
The man is described as in his 40s and claimed to be carrying out routine meter readings for British Gas. The man did not have any ID and was not wearing any British Gas uniform.
PCSO Mark Nevison said: “A suspicious incident was reported to us after British Gas confirmed they did not have anyone taking meter readings in the Upperby area of Carlisle yesterday.
“This man identified himself to the resident as a British Gas worker but was not wearing any uniform, did not carry any form of identification and also had to ask the resident where the gas meter was located. All of these are classic signs of a bogus caller - suggesting that he may have attempted to enter the property for another reason.
“We are appealing for witnesses and if anyone thinks they were approached by this man yesterday afternoon, please get in touch.
“Do not let anyone into your property without seeing proper identification. Any respectable worker will expect to be asked for this and will carry it at all times. If in any doubt, please don’t let them into your home. Take time to check with your supplier and if you think the person is suspicious, contact police by calling 101.”
