Urgent warning to west Cumbrians as distraction burglars target elderly residents

Police in west Cumbria are urging elderly residents to beware of three men they believe are travelling through local towns to commit distraction burglaries.

Between 10:45am and 11:45am today, Wednesday 8 September, four distraction burglaries were reported to police. The first in Whitehaven, the second and third in Workington and the fourth in Dearham.

The men managed to gain entry to the properties before making off with cash taken from purses while keeping the victims distracted.

It is believed the same three men are responsible. The first is described as a white male, 5'10" tall, of chubby build, with long, wavey hair and smartly dressed wearing grey trousers, a white shirt and navy blue tie.

The second is described as a white male, 6ft tall, with short brown hair, wearing grey trousers, black shoes, a shirt, a light blue tie and a black fleece.

There is no description for the third male at this time.

The men have been using excuses such as needing to check water pipes to try and gain access.

If you have seen, or been approached by, men fitting this description, call police on 0845 33 00 247.

Officers are warning residents, particularly elderly and vulnerable members of the community, not to allow strangers into their property. Report any suspicious activity to police. In an emergency call 999.

Officers are also urging people to pass this message on to elderly and vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours.
