Traffic Alert: Abnormal load may cause delays this weekend

Date Published: 10/01/2013 08:43

At 10am on Saturday 12th January 2013, officers from Cumbria Constabulary's Roads Policing Unit will be escorting an abnormal load consisting of a transformer unit from the Docks at Barrow to the M6 Motorway. The load is bound for a substation in Beattock, Scotland.

The abnormal load will leave the docks and travel onto Ramsden Dock Road, Bridge Road, North Road, Ironworks Road, left onto Phoenix Road, then left onto the A590 to the M6, where it will then continue travelling north. It is likely that some traffic disruption may be caused as a result of this movement.

Cones will be placed on Ramsden Dock Road on Friday 11 January to prevent vehicles parking on the central island between Bridge Road and South Gate. Police are asking the public to adhere to the cones that are placed and any other parking restrictions that are in place. Any vehicles left blocking this part of the route may be moved by Police.

The load is expected to be 4.7M wide, 57M long and weighing 218 Tonnes so there may be parts of the route where the load is slow moving as it negotiates junctions and narrow areas. Motorists are asked to be patient and consider altering their travel plans or allow extra time for their journeys to avoid any potential delays.

The loads will be escorted by Police officers and Hi Visibility Abnormal load vehicles provided by the haulage company to ensure the safety of all Road Users and the public.

Further loads are planned in the following weeks and motorists will be kept informed.
