Detectives appeal to trace suspicious motorist in Carlisle

Detectives in Carlisle are investigating the suspicious behaviour of a motorist in the west of the city.

At around 8:50pm on Sunday 22nd August a 14-yr-old girl was walking along Orton Road, Carlisle, when she was approached by the male driver of a five-door silver coloured car. He is described as being in his 30s, of stocky build, with short ginger hair.

The male pulled up alongside the girl and asked her to get in, the girl said no and walked off. The man then drove off towards Wigton Road, turned around and drove back towards the girl, parking opposite the chemist on the Junction of Crosshill Drive and Orton Road where he sat in his car and watched as the girl walked quickly away down Shadygrove Road. He then drove off again towards Wigton Road.

Police are appealing for anyone that may have seen the car in the area that night, or anyone who recognises the description of the male, to come forward.

Detective Constable Tracey Nimmo said: “The young girl involved was very un-nerved by the incident, but acted in the right way. People walking alone should always take care when they are out by making sure they stick to well-lit and well-used routes, and have a mobile phone with them so they can call someone for help should they need to. We would encourage parents to remind youngsters never to accept lifts from strangers, and to report suspicious activity to a trusted adult immediately. Always report incidents of this nature to police.”

Anyone with information about this incident should contact DC Nimmo in Carlisle CID on 0845 33 00 247, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
