We asked at your last SSC meeting what your local priorities were - You said

  1. Speeding vehicles on Borland Avenue, Holywell Crescent and Merith Avenue. Evenings and weekends with drivers wheel spinning and causing noise nuisance.
  2. Youth related anti-social behaviour.

These are community priorities that local people in your area have agreed with the Neighbourhood Police. You can influence priorities by attending your next local meeting and informing your NPT what crimes need clearing up in your area.

We did - action taken or planned to tackle your priorities

  1. Speeding vehicles on Borland Avenue, Holywell Crescent and Merith Avenue. Evenings and weekends with drivers wheel spinning and causing noise nuisance.

We currently have speed monitoring equipment on Borland Avenue to assess the extent of the problem. We should have the results of this in the next two weeks. In the meantime we will continue to use the speedgun in the area to target motorists that are exceeding the speed limit. We will also work with Crown Bevcan to educate the wagon drivers and staff.
  2. Youth related anti-social behaviour.

At our Safer Stronger community meeting on 21/11/2011 you told us that youths were playing football on Holywell Crescent and Borland Avenue. They were kicking the ball about hitting peoples cars and kicking it into peoples gardens.

''Cop In A Shop''

As the dark nights are here we would urge all residents to review their home security. A spate of recent burglaries have nealy all been opportunist where entry has been gained via an insecurity to a house or shed. Regularly reviewing your security can prevent this. Please consider the following actions:-

1.  Fit burglar alarms and good outside security lighting, check regularly to ensure they work.

2.  Lock all windows and doors before you go out.

3.  Remove keys from locks and keep out of reach of windows and doors.

4.  Ensure your house is secure, even when you are in the house or garden.

5.  Ensure side gates and sheds are locked.

6.  Keep valuables safe and well hidden

7.  Postcode your valuables with a UV pen

8.  Leave a light on and draw the curtains if you go out at night.

9.   Look out for your neighbours property

10. Consider joining a Neighbourhood watch scheme.

11.Cancel newspapers, milk etc when you go on holiday.

12. Make sure callers to your home are genuine, always ask for ID

Crime update.

Operation Magnolia

You told us the illegal use of drugs was a problem in Botcherby. In November 2010 Cumbria Police led Operation Magnolia to target the use and supply of Class A drugs on the Botcherby estate.

As a result a number of arrests were made, offenders were remanded in custody and there was a huge reduction in crime in the area.

Although crime is low at the moment we have had a spate of shed burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles on the opposite side of Melbourne Park on the St Aidans area where works vans have been targeted for tools and sheds targeted for pedal cycles and gardening equipment. All  residents are reminded to review their security and report any suspicious activity to the police. The 14 people charged with drugs offences are still either on bail or remanded in custody awaiting trial.

At our Safer, Stronger meeting on 21/11/2011 we spoke to 28 residents and for the third quarter in a row drugs was not highlighted as the main issue.  Speeding on Borland Avenue was again highlighted and we will be using our mobile speed devices to target this problem. Here are the results of a recent speed survey on Holywell Crescent/Borland Avenue. As you can see, for a road which has just one 20mph sign on a pole, no road markings, is as wide as a main road and road narrowing without humps the results are not as bad as anticipated. The average speed is 23mph. We will be asking highways for an upgrade of the signage to reinforce the limit.
