Current Situation - Cumbria Constabulary has had to slow down recruitment and are not, at this time, actively recruiting for new Police Officers. However, should this change then information will be updated accordingly.
Police Officers with Cumbria Constabulary need to be dedicated in order to support and deliver its Neighbourhood Policing Team approach to reducing disorder, crime and the fear of crime.
The ideal police officer comes with qualifications that can never be taught. Life experience counts, as does the ability to be an excellent communicator and decision-maker. With our intensive training programme we’ll make sure that you are ready to face any situation.
The overall aim of policing in Cumbria is:
"to inspire trust and confidence so that the public feel safe, satisfied and reassured".
Trust and confidence lie at the heart of policing.
People need to trust police officers and in turn be confident that they too will be respected and treated fairly. This is especially true in our ethnic minority communities.
The police service is becoming more diverse but we need more people from different backgrounds to reflect today’s multi-cultural community.
Interested in becoming a Police Officer
There are two ways of becoming a police officer. The first is by applying direct to the Constabulary. If accepted you will conduct an intensive Initial Police Learning and Development Programme, or ‘IPLDP’ as it is better known. The probationary period for student police officers lasts for two years during which time continued training is provided.
The alternative is to apply for a Foundation Degree in Policing, which is offered by the University of Cumbria. The course is perfect for younger applicants who may not yet have the life experience necessary to apply direct to the Constabulary, or who may want to combine learning with the student experience.
During the two-year course students will support their studies by becoming a Special Constable and by following a specially designed programme that will enable them to further develop practical policing skills.
Following successful completion of the FdSC in Policing, students will be eligible to apply to the Constabulary and if accepted would join the Constabulary with a substantially reduced training programme.
