Michael Thompson was educated at Workington Grammar School and thereafter studied to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).

He is responsible for the Finance, Estates and Facilities, Procurement, Fleet and Business Support functions and is a member of the force Chief Officer Group.

He was appointed as Director of Finance in 1999 and Director of Finance and Resources in 2004.

He attended the Strategic Command Course at the Police Staff College Bramshill in 2002.
