Tactical Support Group

Cumbria Police also have a Tactical Support Group. This consists of an Inspector and teams of Constables and Sergeants spread geographically around the Force area. The officers provide specialist skills and knowledge in:

Search

Each officer is trained to a very high level to seach buildings, all types of vehicle and large open spaces to look for evidence and people. The team also includes some Police Search Advisors (POLSA's).

Firearms

Each officer is trained as a basic authorised firearms officer (AFO), and many are trained in other specialisms within firearms, e.g. entry to premises and search

CBRN

Each officer is trained and equipped to perform a variety of roles within a policing response to an incident involving a potential chemical, radioactive or nuclear (CBRN) threat. Although extremely rare and unlikely, Cumbria needs an  appropriate level of response should such an incident occur.

Public Order

Each officer is trained in Level 1 Public Order Tactics, and the team are deployed to operations where there is a likelihood of public disorder. More often they act in support of other colleagues in a traditional policing manner to maintain public order and prevent anti-social behaviour.

There are a number of other specialisms and core responsibilities  that the unit provides on behalf of the constabulary.

They also  provide the Force with a 24/7 capability for these skills and are suitably equipped to respond to and deal with spontaneous major incidents. They also provide support to the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in delivering the Cumbria Constabulary Policing Pledge.
